I rise to congratulate Taft Early Learning School in Uxbridge, Massachusetts for being named as a Bronze Award Winner in the USDA Healthier School Challenge. This initiative recognizes those schools enrolled in Team Nutrition that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity – a program that is now part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign.

To achieve this challenge, Taft applied for and received a salad bar grant which enabled them to offer lots of fresh fruit and vegetable choices every day as a part of lunch. They incorporated more whole grains and beans to the menu. They hired an experienced cook to make this happen and added extra physical activity every day which required the creativity and cooperation of the classroom teachers.

I want to congratulate Pricipal Judi Lamarre, Food Service Director Janice Watt, the teachers, administrative staff, students, and parents for their hard work in improving the food, nutrition and exercise programs at Taft Early Learning School. This is a big deal and I’m proud of this important accomplishment.
