Hello [firstname],
I have the honor and pleasure of welcoming my friend and colleague, Congressman Jamie Raskin, to Massachusetts for a special town hall on Defending Our Democracy on Tuesday, May 31 at 6:00 PM at First Churches of Northampton. Doors will open at 5:30pm.
Congressman Raskin is a highly respected constitutional law scholar who served as the lead impeachment manager during former president Donald Trump's second trial. As a member of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Congressman Raskin brings a unique perspective on the challenges facing our democracy and the role each of us have in protecting it.
In my commencement address at UMass Amherst, I told students that "democracies are resilient, but they're also fragile. Just like all of us, they contain within themselves the possibility to self-correct, and to self-destruct." That’s what we saw on January 6th, when a violent mob attacked the Capitol. It was an awful day, not just because people were hurt and died, not just because of the damage to a building, but because of the damage it did to our democracy. And it's why I believe conversations like this are so important.
I'm confident this will be an informative and engaging evening that will leave all of us with deeper insights into the inner workings of our democracy—and inspired to be more involved in the democratic process. I hope to see you there.
