McGovern Statement on Syrian Refugee Crisis
Washington, DC,
November 16, 2015
Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02) released the following statement about the role of the United States in addressing the Syrian refugee crisis: “Keeping Massachusetts families safe is my first priority. While I agree with Governor Baker that we must be cautious in the wake of the Paris attacks, I have serious concerns about any policy that would shut the door to these Syrian refugees. The people who are fleeing Syria are the very people who are harmed most by terrorism. Throughout our country’s history, we have stepped up to help to the most vulnerable, especially the innocent victims of war. “America’s refugee resettlement program has one of the most thorough security and vetting procedures in the world. Often, refugees from Syria’s violent conflict wait up to two years before they receive a visa to resettle here in the U.S. With such rigorous screening measures in place, it is clear that we can help those in need while also keeping our country safe. “Turning our back on these refugees now is not the answer. It would only further isolate these communities and increase instability in an already dangerous region. We have an opportunity to help end the cycle of violence by giving these refugees a second chance. This is a defining moment and I urge our leaders in Massachusetts and across the country to do the right thing by working with the president to address this humanitarian crisis and help these families in need.” ### |
