McGovern Statement on Appalling Reports of Summary Executions in Sudan

WASHINGTONToday, Congressman James P. McGovern, Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos human rights commission, released the following statement in response to appalling new reports of summary executions and other serious atrocities in El Fasher, Sudan:

“I’m horrified and outraged by reports coming out of Sudan that RSF (Rapid Support Forces) fighters are going from house to house in El Fasher and murdering civilians. After living under siege for nearly two years, many civilians in El Fasher are too weak to even flee the violence—some have literally dropped dead in the streets while attempting to escape.

“The international community must urgently work to prevent further atrocities. And Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has not yet even publicly commented on these human rights violations, must urgently focus his attention on Sudan. In his confirmation hearing, he said that he would raise with UAE leaders the fact that they are ‘openly supporting an entity [the RSF] that is carrying out a genocide.’ He must fulfill his commitment quickly and insist that the UAE end support for genocide in Sudan.”
