Today, Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02), announced $2.7 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the Worcester Regional Airport, helping to support its continued success. The funding will support the construction of a partial parallel taxiway to Runway 11/29 in order to reduce the need to back taxi on the runway. This grant will provide funding for phase 1 of a 2 phase project. This phase includes construction of an approximately 3,500 foot haul road.

This project will also install a new CAT III approach lighting system for Runway 11. This grant will provide funding for the reconstruction of Surface Movement Guidance Control System (SMGCS) route taxiways and installation of the lighting system infrastructure which is necessary for the installation of the approach lighting system.

“With this grant, Worcester Regional Airport will have the resources they need to continue their exciting growth,” Congressman McGovern said. “Bringing federal dollars back to Worcester to support our local economy is one of my top priorities. I am pleased this funding will help Worcester Airport expand their runway and increase their capacity as it continues to serve as a major transportation hub. I am proud to have strong partners with the FAA supporting our economy and I look forward to seeing Worcester Airport’s continued growth and success.

“Worcester Regional Airport is fortunate to have Rep. McGovern as a tireless advocate for safety in Washington,’’ said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “The Cat III instrument landing system will make a safe and reliable airport safer and more reliable.’’
