McGovern Statement on Trump Administration Naming Cuba a State Sponsor of Terrorism

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, Congressman James P. McGovern, Chairman of the House Rules Committee and Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, issued this statement following the Trump administration’s decision to name Cuba a state sponsor of terror:

“In yet another stupid and self-defeating move, Donald Trump has, without basis, designated Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism. Coming less than a week after a failed coup attempt at the hands of his own domestic terrorists, Donald Trump’s reckless and baseless decision is nothing more than a vindictive attempt to make it harder for President-elect Biden to clean up after the last four years of failure.

“This decision will hurt America’s credibility around the world and perpetuate Trump’s legacy of inflicting unnecessary suffering and hardship on the Cuban people. This administration tightened the economic embargo and implemented its inhumane policy of obstructing Cuban Americans from supporting loved ones on the island during a pandemic. Again and again, cruelty is the point.

“I look forward to the incoming Biden administration righting this ridiculous wrong and restoring trust in American leadership.
